Spain and Portugal Struggle After Massive Power Outage Shuts Down Roads, Airports, and Subways

Spain and Portugal are grappling with the aftermath of a major, unexplained power outage that threw traffic into chaos, disrupted airports, and led both nations to declare states of emergency.

Portugal’s national grid operator, Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), reported that electricity was lost across the entire Iberian Peninsula — and even parts of France — shortly after midday. Hours later, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed that authorities were still investigating the cause of the blackout.

The outage left cities without lighting or power, forcing subway systems to a standstill. In Madrid, major traffic jams quickly formed as traffic lights failed, worsening the disruption.
